The Group Gift Guide

Occasion guide

New baby gifts

A group gift for new parents is most useful when it saves them money on something they genuinely need, or buys them time. Here is how to approach it thoughtfully.

Ask before you buy

New parents often already have clothes and soft toys. A quick, private question to a partner, sibling or close friend usually reveals the gap: a pram accessory, a car seat, nursery furniture or a voucher for later.

Consider practical help as the gift

Batch-cooked meals, a cleaning service for a month or a grocery voucher are frequently more welcome than another gift set, and a group can fund them easily.

Be sensitive with timing

Births rarely run to plan. Set a flexible deadline, avoid chasing people for money in the first days, and hold the gift until the family says they are ready for visitors.

Keep contributions voluntary

Small amounts add up. Make it clear that giving nothing is fine, and that names on the card are not tied to who contributed.
