The Group Gift Guide

Occasion guide

Wedding gifts

Group wedding gifts usually work best when one person co-ordinates, the couple's own wishes come first, and nobody is told what to give. This is what to think about before you start.

Follow the couple's stated wishes

Many couples now ask for a contribution towards something specific rather than a list of household items. Read the invitation or wedding website carefully before organising anything, and check with a close family member if the wording is unclear.

Agree who is collecting and by when

One organiser, a clear closing date a week or so before the wedding, and a short message explaining what the money is for keeps things simple. Give people a way to opt out quietly.

Keep amounts private and voluntary

Guests travel different distances, take different amounts of time off and have very different budgets. Suggest a range rather than a figure, and never share a list of who gave what.

Remember the message matters

A card signed by everyone, or a short note from each person, is often the part couples keep. Collect messages alongside any money.
