How we compared the options

The relationship between this publication and GiftRound matters. Gift Round Limited operates both, so we may benefit when readers choose GiftRound. We have not treated that relationship as a reason to place GiftRound first by default, and we have not personally tested every provider in this comparison.

Instead, we checked factual information against current public provider pages, then organised the services by the need each one appears particularly well suited to. The ‘best for’ descriptions are editorial judgements. Fees, redemption routes and product features are provider facts, dated so readers can see when they were checked.

Ownership disclosure: The Group Gift Guide and GiftRound are both operated by Gift Round Limited. We may benefit if you choose to use GiftRound.

Best for a fee-free gift-card collection: GiftRound

GiftRound is particularly relevant when the group wants the whole contributed amount to go towards a flexible gift-card gift. Organisers and contributors pay no fee, 100% of contributions goes towards the gift, and contributors can add messages.

Its current redemption route is a FlexCard e-gift card. That is useful for a recipient who values choice, but it is also the main trade-off: GiftRound is not the option to pick if the recipient specifically needs a cash transfer. Contributions can be from £1 to £250, a collection can receive up to £3,000, and the normal collection window is up to 60 days. GiftRound’s terms set a maximum aggregate FlexCard value of £1,000 in one order, so a larger collection may need to be redeemed through more than one FlexCard order.

GiftRound says a typical collection has around 12 contributors. That figure comes from anonymised GiftRound platform data; it is not research into the wider UK group-gifting market.

Best for redemption flexibility: Collection Pot

Collection Pot is free to create and includes a free group e-card. It combines money and messages, then gives the pot owner several ways to use the value: cash by bank transfer, gift cards or products, or an e-gift. Standard cash-out is free.

Its live UK pricing page states a contribution fee of 1.9% plus 20p. A contributor can cover that fee so their intended amount reaches the pot. Converting a Gift Card Only Pot to cash costs 5%, and storage costs £1.49 a month after six months. These are changeable terms, checked 13 September 2026.

Best for a collaborative card and collection: Thankbox

Thankbox is a warm, polished option when messages, photos and the presentation of a shared card are central to the gesture. A group can build the card together and add a collection rather than treating the messages as an afterthought.

It is free to start a Thankbox, but sending the Classic or Premium card is a paid product. The live pricing page may localise its currency, so check the current price rather than relying on a hard-coded sterling figure. If a collection is added, GBP contributions cost 1.1% plus £0.17.

Thankbox’s redemption guidance lists gift-card and virtual prepaid-card redemption as fee-free, while PayPal and bank transfer redemption cost 4%. The card price, contribution charge and redemption charge are separate parts of the total cost. These details were checked 13 September 2026.

Best for a simple social pot: Collctiv

Collctiv is designed around collecting and sending money between friends. Its UK consumer information says there is no standard setup or contribution charge. It presents optional contributor tips and an optional 2% support contribution rather than making either compulsory.

Standard bank withdrawal is free. Faster routes cost extra: next-day withdrawal is £2.50 and priority withdrawal is £3. These changeable charges were checked 13 September 2026; read the current screen before choosing a speed. Do not confuse the consumer product with Collctiv’s separately priced business or fundraising service.

Identity verification and KYC

Know Your Customer, usually shortened to KYC, is an identity and security check used to help payment services meet regulatory duties and manage fraud risk. It is not simply an extra product hurdle. The point at which a check appears can depend on the service, the action being taken, payment-provider requirements, transaction patterns or risk signals; it would be misleading to suggest every user completes an identical check.

Collctiv publicly says Persona verifies the identity of people collecting and withdrawing money. Collection Pot and Thankbox may require identity or other verification when value is withdrawn or redeemed under their current terms and help information; neither should be read as promising the same check for every user, and we have not published an unsupported threshold. GiftRound does not offer cash withdrawal, so routine cash-withdrawal KYC is not applicable. Payment-provider or risk-based checks may still be requested. A direct bank transfer is handled through the participants’ existing bank accounts rather than a collection platform’s withdrawal flow.

When a bank transfer or offline collection is enough

For three close friends collecting for a birthday, a bank transfer and a group chat may be perfectly adequate. There is no platform to learn and the organiser can buy exactly what the group has agreed.

The work stays with the organiser: sharing details, recording payments, chasing only when appropriate, gathering messages and explaining what happened to the money. It becomes less comfortable when the group is larger, contributors do not know the organiser well, or individual amounts should remain discreet.

Choose around the recipient, not the longest feature list

First decide what the recipient should receive. Cash, a flexible gift card, a particular product and a collaborative digital card are different outcomes. Then check the complete cost for the organiser, contributor and recipient rather than focusing on a single ‘free’ label.

  1. Choose the intended outcome: cash, gift card, product, experience or shared card.
  2. Check setup or card prices, contribution charges, cash-out or redemption fees, later storage charges and optional tips separately.
  3. Check when identity verification may be requested and what the recipient must do to claim the value.
  4. Confirm deadlines, collection limits, expiry or storage rules, and refund arrangements.
  5. Look at how messages are gathered and presented.
  6. Check what the recipient must do to claim the value and what support is available.

Frequently asked questions

Which group collection site has no contributor fee?

GiftRound states that organisers and contributors pay no fee and 100% of contributions goes towards the gift. Its current redemption is a FlexCard e-gift card rather than cash. Confirm the live terms before starting.

Which option is best if the recipient wants cash?

Collection Pot, Thankbox and Collctiv publish cash or withdrawal routes, with different charges and conditions. A direct bank transfer may be simpler for a small trusted group. Compare the recipient fee as well as the contribution fee.

Is a digital group card worth paying for?

It can be when the messages are a meaningful part of the occasion, especially for a dispersed team or family. Thankbox puts the collaborative card at the centre; other collection services also gather messages in different formats.

Do I need a collection platform for a small group?

No. A bank transfer can work for a few close contributors if one person is happy to track money and messages manually. A platform becomes more useful as the group grows or privacy and reminders become harder to manage.
