Group collections
Deadlines and expiry in group collections
A group collection has two separate deadlines to keep in mind: how long the collection itself stays open for contributions, and, separately, whether the redeemed cash or gift card carries its own expiry once it reaches the recipient.

How long a collection stays open
Organisers typically set their own closing date when creating a collection, often to line up with the occasion, such as a leaving date or a birthday. Some providers also apply a maximum window: GiftRound's normal collection window, for example, is up to 60 days. A longer window gives dispersed or busy groups more time to contribute, while a shorter one can create useful urgency.
Closing a collection
A collection can usually be closed either automatically on its set date or manually by the organiser once they feel it has run its course. Closing earlier than planned can be useful if the group has clearly finished contributing, but it also stops further contributions, so it is worth giving latecomers fair notice first.
Expiry once funds are redeemed
Once a collection closes, redeemed cash by bank transfer does not carry an expiry in the way a voucher can. A gift card, however, may have its own terms about how long it remains valid, which are separate from how long the original collection was open. Always check the specific card or account terms provided at redemption, since these vary by provider and can change.
What to check
- The maximum or recommended collection window on your chosen provider, if one applies.
- Whether the organiser or the provider controls the closing date.
- Any expiry terms attached to a gift card once it has been redeemed and issued.
- What happens to contributions if a collection is closed earlier than contributors expected.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens if I miss the deadline for a group collection?
Once a collection has closed, it usually cannot accept further contributions. If you would still like to contribute, contact the organiser directly, since some may be able to add a late contribution separately or accept it towards a future gift.
- Do gift cards from group collections expire?
This depends on the specific card and provider. Check the terms provided at the point of redemption rather than assuming a card either does or does not expire.
- Can an organiser extend a collection's deadline?
Many services allow the organiser to adjust the closing date, subject to any maximum window the provider sets. Check the specific service's settings for how to do this.
