Group collections
How online group collections work, step by step
An online group collection moves through three stages: an organiser sets it up and shares a link, contributors each add what they choose, and the organiser then arranges the payout to the recipient as cash, a gift card or a gift.

Key facts
- Step 1
- Organiser creates the collection and shares the link
- Step 2
- Contributors add an amount and an optional message
- Step 3
- Collection closes on the chosen date or when the organiser ends it
- Step 4
- Organiser redeems or withdraws the total
- Step 5
- Recipient receives the gift, cash or gift card
Before you start
Before opening a collection it helps to know roughly who is being asked, what the recipient would actually like or need, whether they want cash or would be happy with a gift card, and by when the money needs to be ready. These decisions shape which service suits the group best; our fees and gift cards guides go into the trade-offs.
For the organiser
- Choose a service and create the collection, giving it a clear title and description of what it is for.
- Set a closing date if the service supports one, and decide whether to show a target amount.
- Share the link with the intended group only, using whatever channel keeps it private to that group.
- Monitor contributions and messages as they come in, and send reminders if useful.
- Close the collection and redeem or withdraw the funds according to the provider's process.
- Arrange the gift, cash transfer or gift card for the recipient, and let the group know it has been given.
For the contributor
- Open the link shared by the organiser.
- Choose an amount to give. Participation is voluntary, and choosing not to contribute is completely acceptable.
- Add a short message if the service supports one.
- Pay using the supported method, which is usually a debit or credit card.
- Keep an eye out in case the organiser needs to verify a larger contribution.
For the recipient
The recipient is usually told about the collection once it closes, as part of the surprise or the presentation of the gift. Depending on the service and the organiser's choice, they might receive a cash transfer, a gift card such as GiftRound's FlexCard, a physical gift, or a collaborative e-card alongside the money. Where identity verification applies to redemption, the recipient may be asked to confirm who they are before funds or a gift card are released.
Closing the collection and redeeming funds
Most services let the organiser close a collection manually or automatically on a set date. After closing, redemption depends on the provider: some pay out to a bank account, some issue a gift card, and some offer a choice. Any identity checks tend to happen at this redemption stage rather than when someone simply contributes. See our safety and KYC guides for what to expect.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does an online group collection stay open?
This is set by the organiser and, on some services, capped by the provider. Our expiry guide covers typical collection windows and what happens if a deadline passes.
- Can I contribute anonymously?
Some services let a contributor leave a message without their amount being shown to the whole group, while others display contributions openly. Check the specific service's settings before assuming either way.
- What if the recipient finds out before the surprise is ready?
Keep the collection link private to the intended group and be mindful of shared devices or group chats the recipient might see. If a collection is not meant to be a surprise, there is no issue with the recipient knowing from the start.
